Axolotls need more than a tank filled with water.

They rely on:

A properly sized aquarium
A fully established nitrogen cycle

You don't need to become an aquarium scientist overnight.

The First Rule: Set Up the Tank Before Buying the Axolotl

Your axolotl's aquarium should be properly prepared and fully biologically cycled before the animal is introduced.

Simply filling a tank, adding water conditioner and running the filter for several days does not mean the aquarium is cycled.

Cycling establishes beneficial bacteria that process toxic waste.

The simplified nitrogen cycle is:

Axolotl waste → Ammonia → Nitrite → Nitrate

Before your axolotl moves in, your aquarium should consistently show:

Ammonia: 0 ppm
Nitrite: 0 ppm
Nitrate: present but controlled
Stable, appropriate pH
Suitable GH and KH
Cool, stable water temperature

If your tank isn't cycled yet, that's completely fine.

Just don't rush the process.

Your First Axolotl Shopping Checklist

Here's the basic equipment most new axolotl owners will need.

1. A Suitable Aquarium

For one adult axolotl, Little Lotl’s recommends approximately:

120 litres or larger

Longer tanks are generally better than tall tanks because axolotls spend most of their time using the floor space.

Your aquarium should have enough room for:

Comfortable movement
At least one secure hide
Feeding space
Filtration
Plants if desired
Easy cleaning and maintenance

2. A Good Filter

Axolotls produce a considerable amount of waste.

They therefore need effective biological filtration, but they generally dislike strong water movement.

Suitable options may include:

Sponge filters
Canister filters with softened flow
Biological filtration
Other filters configured for gentle water movement

Your filter should provide enough biological media for beneficial bacteria while avoiding a strong current around the aquarium.

3. An Air Pump

If you're using a sponge filter, you'll also need an appropriate air pump.

Air pumps can also help provide gentle aeration within an axolotl aquarium.

Choose an air pump that suits the size and number of sponge filters you plan to run.

4. A Reliable Water Test Kit

Clear water is not necessarily safe water.

Your test kit is one of the most important pieces of equipment you'll own.

At minimum, you need to monitor:

Ammonia
Nitrite
Nitrate
pH

Axolotl owners should also understand:

Testing lets you identify problems before your axolotl has to announce them with stressed gills and a hunger strike.

5. Water Conditioner

Tap water needs to be treated before it enters an axolotl aquarium.

A suitable conditioner should deal with chlorine and chloramine where present.

Water conditioner is used when:

Initially filling the aquarium
Performing water changes
Topping up water
Preparing temporary tubs

Important

Water conditioner makes tap water suitable for aquarium use.

It does not cycle the aquarium.

Those are two separate jobs.

6. Products for Cycling the Aquarium

If you're starting with a brand-new aquarium, you'll need to establish the biological filter before your axolotl arrives.

Depending on your starting water and setup, this may involve:

A controlled ammonia source
Beneficial bacteria
Biological filter media
Water conditioner
GH or KH adjustment where testing shows it is needed
Regular water testing

7. A Reliable Thermometer

Axolotls are cool-water amphibians.

Little Lotl’s recommends approximately:

14°C to 18°C

Temperature is particularly important for Australian keepers.

During warmer months, you may need:

Aquarium cooling fans
Room cooling
Better airflow
An aquarium chiller
A combination of cooling methods

What you need depends heavily on your home, location and summer temperatures.

Do not wait for a heatwave before working out how you're going to keep the aquarium cool.

8. Safe Hides

Axolotls benefit from secure places to retreat from light and activity.

Provide at least one suitable hide per axolotl.

Choose hides that are:

Large enough for the animal
Smooth
Free from sharp edges
Stable
Easy to clean
Made from aquarium-safe materials

Your axolotl does not care whether the hide matches the lounge-room décor.

They will, however, care if it has a sharp edge.

9. Safe Substrate

Axolotls feed using suction and may accidentally swallow material from the aquarium floor.

Avoid:

Small gravel
Pebbles
Sharp stones
Loose material that could be swallowed

Depending on the axolotl's age and setup, suitable options may include:

Bare-bottom tanks
Appropriate fine sand
Very large smooth river rocks that cannot possibly be swallowed

When in doubt, choose safety over decoration.

10. Axolotl Food

Axolotl feeding requirements change as they grow.

Suitable foods may include:

Blackworms
Quality axolotl pellets
Earthworms
Other appropriate foods depending on age and size

11. Aquarium Plants

Plants aren't compulsory, but they can be a useful addition to an axolotl aquarium.

Cover

Some nitrate uptake

Choose plants that can tolerate cool freshwater conditions.

And be prepared for your axolotl to occasionally rearrange your carefully planned aquascape without consulting management.

12. Basic Cleaning & Maintenance Equipment

A few simple tools will make routine aquarium care much easier.

Useful items include:

Aquarium siphon
Bucket used only for aquarium maintenance
Fine mesh net
Algae-cleaning tool
Turkey baster or similar spot-cleaning tool
Towels
Water-testing supplies

A dedicated aquarium bucket is strongly recommended.

Once a bucket has been introduced to household cleaning chemicals, it should retire from aquarium duty.

What You DON'T Need to Buy Immediately

First-time owners often feel they need every aquarium product on the shelf.

You don't.

Products should solve an actual need.

For example, you generally shouldn't add:

GH conditioner unless testing shows GH is too low
KH buffer unless testing shows KH needs adjustment
Medication “just in case”
Random chemical treatments without knowing what problem you're treating

Then choose the product.

This saves money and usually creates a more stable aquarium.

Don't constantly chase tiny changes.

Stable appropriate conditions are generally more important than trying to make every number land on one exact value.

How Do I Know When My Tank Is Ready?

Your tank is not ready just because:

The water is clear
The filter has been running for a week
You added bottled bacteria
You added conditioner
You were told to let the water sit
The aquarium looks established

You need to prove the biological cycle works.

Little Lotl’s recommends completing a fishless cycle and confirming that the aquarium can process an appropriate ammonia challenge back to:

Ammonia: 0 ppm

and

Nitrite: 0 ppm

within the expected timeframe before introducing your axolotl.

Found Your Axolotl Before Your Tank Is Ready?

Sometimes the perfect axolotl appears before your aquarium has finished cycling.

Don't panic-cycle the tank.

Purchased axolotls may be held by arrangement while you finish preparing their aquarium.

Our standard holding fee is:

$5 per axolotl, per week or part thereof

We would rather keep your axolotl safely in our care a little longer than send them into an aquarium that isn't ready.

Choosing Your First Axolotl

Once the aquarium is ready, it's time for the fun part.

The exact timeframe varies depending on temperature, filter media, bacterial population, ammonia source and whether established biological media is used.

The tank is ready when testing proves the biological filter can reliably process waste, not when a particular number of days has passed.

Do I need a chiller?

Not every home requires one.

Whether you need a chiller depends on your local climate, room temperature and how effectively other cooling methods maintain suitable water temperatures.

Australian owners should have a realistic cooling plan before summer.

Do I need a test kit?

Yes.

Regular testing is essential because ammonia and nitrite can be dangerous even when aquarium water looks perfectly clear.

Can I use tap water?

Usually, but it must be appropriately treated and its water chemistry should be tested.

Your local source water may differ considerably from water in another suburb, city or state.

Can I use gravel?

Small gravel and pebbles should be avoided because axolotls may accidentally swallow them while feeding.

What should I feed my first axolotl?

The appropriate diet depends on age and size.

Check the individual animal's listing and transition information, and continue with suitable age-appropriate foods.
