The API GH & KH Test Kit
The API GH & KH Test Kit is an essential aquarium water testing kit designed to help maintain stable and healthy water conditions for axolotls, fish, shrimp, aquatic plants, and freshwater aquariums.
This easy-to-use test kit accurately measures General Hardness (GH) and Carbonate Hardness (KH), two critical water parameters that influence pH stability, mineral balance, aquatic health, and overall aquarium stability.
Monitoring GH and KH levels regularly helps prevent dangerous pH fluctuations and supports a balanced aquarium ecosystem. Proper GH levels provide essential minerals such as calcium and magnesium for healthy growth and development, while stable KH levels help buffer the water and prevent sudden pH crashes.
Ideal for axolotl tanks, freshwater aquariums, planted tanks, shrimp tanks, and breeding setups, the API GH & KH Test Kit provides fast, reliable results to help you make informed decisions about water changes, buffering, and mineral supplementation.
Key Benefits

• Helps maintain stable aquarium pH levels
• Supports healthy axolotls, fish, shrimp, and aquatic plants
• Assists in preventing dangerous pH swings and crashes
• Essential for monitoring mineral balance in freshwater aquariums
• Easy-to-use liquid test kit with reliable results
• Suitable for axolotl tanks, planted aquariums, and shrimp tanks
• Ideal for routine aquarium maintenance and water testing
Directions for Testing KH (Carbonate Hardness)
- Rinse a clean test tube with the water to be tested.
- Fill the test tube with 5ml of aquarium water to the marked line.
- Hold the KH Test Solution bottle vertically and add one drop at a time, counting each drop carefully.
- Cap the test tube and invert several times after each drop.
- Continue adding drops until the water changes from blue to bright yellow after shaking.
- The number of drops required to change the colour indicates the KH level of the water.
Tip: If the colour is difficult to identify after the first drop, remove the cap and view the test tube from above against a white background.
Directions for Testing GH (General Hardness)
- Rinse a clean test tube with the water to be tested.
- Fill the test tube with 5ml of aquarium water to the marked line.
- Follow the included instructions to complete the GH test and determine hardness levels accurately.
Regular GH and KH testing is an important part of maintaining a stable, healthy aquarium environment and supporting the long-term wellbeing of your aquatic pets.
