How to Cycle a New Axolotl Tank: A Simple Step-by-Step Guide

Bringing home a new axolotl is exciting. You have the tank, the filter is humming away, the hides are positioned just right and your new little water dragon is waiting for its palace.
But before your axolotl goes anywhere near that new aquarium, there is one extremely important job to do:
You need to cycle the tank.
Unfortunately, this is also one of the most misunderstood parts of axolotl care.
Many new owners purchase an axolotl from a breeder, aquarium store or marketplace seller and are told things such as:
“Just age the water for 24 hours.”
“Let the tap water sit overnight.”
“Add Prime and you'll be right tomorrow.”
“Add some bottled bacteria and put the axolotl in.”
“The filter has been running for a few days, so it's cycled.”
Unfortunately, none of these things by themselves mean your aquarium is cycled.
Simply letting water sit does not establish the nitrogen cycle, and it is not a reliable way to deal with chloramine.
Water also needs to have appropriate pH, GH and KH, and most importantly, your aquarium needs enough established beneficial bacteria to safely process the waste your axolotl produces.
So let's make cycling much less intimidating.
First: What Does Cycling an Axolotl Tank Actually Mean?
Axolotls produce waste.
That waste eventually creates ammonia.
Ammonia is toxic.
Fortunately, beneficial bacteria living primarily throughout your filter media can process ammonia and convert it into nitrite.
Nitrite is also toxic.
Another group of beneficial bacteria then converts nitrite into nitrate.
Nitrate is considerably easier to manage and is controlled primarily through regular partial water changes.
The simplified nitrogen cycle looks like this:
Axolotl Waste → Ammonia → Nitrite → Nitrate
Cycling your aquarium means establishing enough of these bacteria before your axolotl moves in.
The goal is simple:
Your aquarium should be able to process the waste your axolotl produces without allowing ammonia or nitrite to accumulate.
Why Isn't “Aged Water” Enough?
This is probably one of the most common pieces of outdated advice new axolotl owners hear.
You may be told to fill the aquarium and leave it for 24 hours, a few days or even a week.
But there is an important distinction:
Aged water
Water that has simply been sitting.
Conditioned water
Water that has been properly treated for substances such as chlorine and chloramine.
Cycled aquarium
An aquarium containing an established biological filter capable of processing ammonia
and nitrite.
These are three completely different things.
Leaving water sitting does not create the bacterial colonies needed to process your axolotl's waste.
What You'll Need to Cycle Your Axolotl Tank
You don't need to turn your kitchen into a chemistry laboratory.
We recommend having:
Your fully set-up aquarium
Aquarium filter
Plenty of biological filter media
Water conditioner
Liquid freshwater test kit
GH and KH testing
An ammonia source suitable for fishless cycling
Beneficial bacteria
Thermometer
Notebook, spreadsheet or phone note for recording results

You don't necessarily need every product listed above. What you need depends on your starting water parameters and whether you're beginning with completely new filter media.
Step 1: Completely Set Up Your Aquarium
Set your aquarium up as though your axolotl were arriving tomorrow.
Install:
Filter
Biological media
Substrate if being used
Hides
Plants
Thermometer
Any permanent aquarium equipment
Fill the aquarium with water and get the filter running.
Do not add your axolotl yet.
Your filter needs to run continuously throughout the cycling process because this is where a large proportion of your beneficial bacteria will eventually establish themselves.
Step 2: Condition Your Tap Water
Tap water needs to be treated before being used in an axolotl aquarium.
Simply allowing the water to stand is not a reliable substitute for proper conditioning, particularly where chloramine is used.
For this stage you can use:

Always follow the dosing instructions for the amount of new water being treated.
Important:
Water conditioner makes tap water suitable for aquarium use. It does not cycle the aquarium.
Conditioning your water and establishing your biological filter are two separate jobs.
Step 3: Test Your Starting Water
Before adding cycling products, find out what you're actually working with.
Test:
Ammonia
Nitrite
Nitrate
pH
GH
KH
Temperature
We also recommend testing your tap water separately.
This gives you a baseline and helps identify whether nitrate, hardness or other readings are already present in your source water.
Write your results down.
Trust us.
After ten test tubes and three slightly different shades of green, “I'm sure I remember what yesterday's reading was” becomes surprisingly unreliable.
Step 4: Check Your GH and KH
Two water parameters new axolotl owners often overlook are GH and KH.
GH: General Hardness
GH primarily relates to dissolved minerals including calcium and magnesium.
Axolotls generally prefer mineral-rich water rather than extremely soft water.
If testing shows your GH is too low, Little Lotl's Axolotl GH Conditioner can be used to raise general hardness appropriately.
Do not add GH conditioner simply because you have a bottle.
Test first and adjust only when required.
KH: Carbonate Hardness
KH is related to your aquarium's buffering capacity.
In simple terms, appropriate KH helps prevent sudden swings in pH.
This is particularly important during cycling because the biological processes occurring in the aquarium can gradually consume buffering capacity.
If your KH is inadequate, Little Lotl's Axolotl KH Buffer can be used to raise carbonate hardness and help stabilise pH.
Again:
Test first. Adjust second.
We're cycling an aquarium, not seasoning chips.
Step 5: Add Your Ammonia Source
Beneficial bacteria need something to eat.
For the first bacterial population, that food is ammonia.
A clean, measured ammonia source is much easier to control than throwing fish food or decomposing seafood into the aquarium and hoping for the best.

Axolotl Cycle-Right is designed to provide the ammonia source needed during fishless aquarium cycling.
Use it according to the product directions to establish the controlled ammonia level required for the cycling process.
A commonly used target for fishless cycling is around:
2 ppm ammonia
More is not better.
Overloading the aquarium with ammonia can create excessively high ammonia and nitrite readings and may actually make the cycling process harder.
Step 6: Add Beneficial Bacteria
Now we need the microscopic workforce.
Little Lotl's Bacta-Boost Beneficial Bacteria
Bacta-Boost Beneficial Bacteria can be added during aquarium set-up and cycling to help introduce beneficial bacteria into the system.
Follow the product directions carefully.
Bottled beneficial bacteria can help get the process moving, but remember one extremely important rule:
Adding bottled bacteria does not automatically mean your aquarium is cycled.
Your test results determine whether the tank is cycled.
The bottle starts the conversation.
Your test kit gets the final vote.

One of the best ways to accelerate the establishment of biological filtration is to introduce already established biological media from a healthy aquarium.

Cycled biological noodles provide established porous media that can be added to suitable aquarium filters to introduce beneficial bacteria directly into the filtration system.
Established biological media can significantly shorten the road compared with starting from scratch.
However:
You should still test the aquarium and confirm that it can process ammonia and nitrite before adding your axolotl.
Seeded media is a head start, not permission to throw away the test kit.
Step 7: Begin Testing Ammonia and Nitrite
Now the interesting part begins.
Initially you'll usually see ammonia present.
As the first bacterial colony develops, ammonia should begin decreasing.
Then you should start seeing:
Nitrite.
Excellent.
Your bacteria are doing something.
But you're not finished yet.
Step 8: The Nitrite Stage
This is where many people celebrate too early.
They test the aquarium and discover:
Ammonia: 0 ppm
Fantastic!
Except...
Nitrite: extremely high
The tank isn't ready.
The first bacterial population is successfully converting ammonia into nitrite, but the second population still needs to establish strongly enough to convert that nitrite into nitrate.
Eventually you should see:
Ammonia ↓
Nitrite ↓
Nitrate ↑
Now your microscopic sewage plant is beginning to function properly.
Step 9: Do Not Continually Pour in More Ammonia
Another common cycling mistake is assuming the bacteria need another enormous meal every morning.
They don't.
Follow the directions for the cycling method and ammonia source you're using.
With Axolotl Cycle-Right, follow the product dosing instructions and use your test results to determine what is happening in the aquarium.
Don't simply add another full dose every day regardless of your readings.
Extremely high ammonia and nitrite can slow the process rather than speed it up.
Step 10: Keep Testing pH and KH
While everyone is staring obsessively at ammonia and nitrite, pH and KH are quietly sitting in the corner plotting a surprise.
During nitrification, carbonate buffering can gradually be consumed.
If KH is already low, pH may begin dropping.
A substantial fall in pH can slow or stall the cycling process.
This is why we recommend periodically checking:
pH
KH
If KH genuinely needs increasing, Little Lotl's Axolotl KH Buffer can help restore carbonate hardness and improve pH stability.
Don't automatically dose it.
Base adjustments on your actual test results.
Step 11: How Do I Know When My Tank Is Cycled?
This is the most important step in the entire guide.
A tank isn't cycled because a certain number of days have passed.
It isn't cycled because:
The water looks clear
The filter has been running for a week
You added bottled bacteria
You added conditioner
Someone said 48 hours was enough
Your test results tell you.
Once ammonia and nitrite are both consistently reaching zero, perform a final challenge test.
Dose the aquarium to approximately:
2 ppm ammonia
Then test again approximately 24 hours later.
For an axolotl-ready aquarium, our goal is for the biological filter to process that ammonia without leaving measurable ammonia or nitrite behind.
Before introducing your axolotl, Little Lotl's recommends:

Appropriate and stable for an axolotl aquarium
If ammonia or nitrite remains detectable after the challenge, the aquarium isn't quite ready.
Give the bacteria more time.
Step 12: Perform Your Final Water Change
Once your biological filter passes its final ammonia-processing test, nitrate may be higher than you want.
That's normal.
Perform an appropriate partial water change using properly conditioned water.
Use Little Lotl's Axolotl Chlorine Eliminator when preparing the replacement tap water.
Then test everything again:
Ammonia
Nitrite
Nitrate
pH
GH
KH
Temperature
If GH or KH requires adjustment, this is where your Axolotl GH Conditioner or Axolotl KH Buffer may also be useful.
Your final goal is not simply zero ammonia.
You want the entire water chemistry picture to be appropriate and stable.
Step 13: Welcome Your Axolotl Home
Once the aquarium:
Successfully processes its ammonia challenge
Has 0 ppm ammonia
Has 0 ppm nitrite
Has nitrate below 20 ppm
Has stable pH 7.2-8.2 ppm
Has appropriate GH and KH
Is maintained at 14–18°C
...your new little water dragon can finally move into the castle.
Continue monitoring water parameters after introduction, especially during the first few weeks.
A cycled aquarium is a living biological system.
It still needs maintenance.

How Long Does Cycling Take?
There is no exact number of days.
The time required depends on things including:
Whether the filter media is new or established
Amount of biological media
Beneficial bacteria added
Ammonia availability
pH
KH
Temperature
Source water chemistry
Filter design
Whether the cycle stalls
Starting with completely sterile equipment may take several weeks.
Using Bacta-Boost, Cycled Bio Sponge Filters or Cycled Bio Noodles may help establish biological filtration sooner.
But regardless of how quickly things appear to progress:
The test results decide when the aquarium is ready, not the calendar.
Common Axolotl Cycling Mistakes
“I left the water sitting for 24 hours.”
That doesn't establish biological filtration.
“I added water conditioner, so it's cycled.”
Water conditioner prepares tap water.
It does not create a mature colony of nitrifying bacteria.
“I added Bacta-Boost, so I can put my axolotl in immediately.”
Beneficial bacteria products can help establish the bacterial colony, but you still need to test and confirm the aquarium can process ammonia and nitrite.
“I ran the filter for a week.”
A wet filter is not necessarily a cycled filter.
The bacteria require an ammonia source.
“The water looks perfectly clear.”
Clear water can contain dangerous ammonia or nitrite.
Unfortunately, neither arrives carrying a tiny warning flag.
“Ammonia is zero, so I'm done.”
Check nitrite.
Both must be zero.
“I'll just add more Cycle-Right every day.”
Don't blindly dose ammonia.
Test first and follow the product instructions.
“I'll replace the dirty filter media.”
That “dirty” biological media may contain much of the bacterial colony keeping your aquarium safe.
Reusable biological media should not routinely be replaced simply because it looks grubby.
“I'll wash the filter under the tap.”
Avoid rinsing established biological filter media in untreated tap water.
Where cleaning is necessary, gently rinse reusable media using removed aquarium water or appropriately conditioned water.
“GH and KH don't really matter.”
They absolutely deserve attention.
GH relates to mineral content while KH contributes to buffering and pH stability.
Test them rather than guessing.
The Little Lotl's Simple Cycling Recipe
For beginners, the entire process can be remembered like this:
1. Condition
Treat your tap water with Axolotl Chlorine Eliminator.
2. Test
Measure ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, pH, GH and KH.
3. Adjust if necessary
Use Axolotl GH Conditioner or Axolotl KH Buffer only when your test results show adjustment is required.
4. Feed the cycle
Provide the controlled ammonia source using Axolotl Cycle-Right.
5. Add bacteria
6. Seed where possible
Use Cycled Bio Sponge Filters or Cycled Bio Noodles for an established-bacteria head start.
7. Test
Watch ammonia convert to nitrite and nitrite convert to nitrate.
8. Prove it
Challenge the established aquarium with approximately 2 ppm ammonia.
9. Confirm
Around 24 hours later you want:
Ammonia: 0 ppm
Nitrite: 0 ppm
10. Water change
Reduce nitrate to below 20 ppm using properly conditioned replacement water.
11. Retest everything
12. Add your axolotl
That's cycling without the headache.
