But before your axolotl goes anywhere near that new aquarium, there is one extremely important job to do: You need to cycle the tank.

Aquasoil is popular in planted aquariums because it helps aquatic plants grow. It can look natural, support root-feeding plants, and create beautiful aquascapes. But while aquasoil may be useful in tropical planted tanks, it is generally not recommended for axolotl tanks.

However, methylene blue must be measured carefully and should never replace good water quality or professional veterinary care.

A clean axolotl tank does not need to look freshly scrubbed every day. In fact, cleaning too aggressively can disturb the beneficial bacteria that keep your aquarium safe and stable. The goal is not to make the tank sterile. The goal is to remove waste, control nitrate and maintain consistent water quality without disrupting the nitrogen cycle.
