Cycling your axolotl tank means establishing colonies of beneficial bacteria in the filter and on tank surfaces before your axolotl arrives. These bacteria convert toxic ammonia, which comes from waste and leftover food, into nitrite and then into nitrate. Nitrate is much less harmful and can be managed through water changes or used by live plants.
Without a fully cycled tank, ammonia and nitrite levels can spike quickly. This can burn gills, stress the immune system, and in severe cases, lead to death. Cycling is essential; it’s the plumbing that makes the “apartment” livable for your axolotl.
In this guide, I’ll share a fishless cycling method that is safe, predictable, and perfect for new axolotl keepers.
Ideal Water Parameters for Axolotls
Temperature: 14–18°C (can tolerate roughly 10–18°C)
Ammonia (NH₃/NH₄⁺): 0 ppm
Nitrite (NO₂⁻): 0 ppm
Nitrate (NO₃⁻): Ideally under 20 ppm
pH: 7.6 is ideal, but up to 8.0 is acceptable
You’ll monitor these parameters with a liquid freshwater test kit, such as the API Freshwater Master Test Kit.
Supplies You’ll Need
To successfully cycle your axolotl tank, gather the following supplies:
Aquarium Choose an appropriate size for your planned adult axolotl(s); 120 liters is recommended.
Filter: A bio sponge filter, accompanied by a gentle canister or HOB filter with low flow suitable for axolotls.
Dechlorinator: To remove chlorine/chloramine and heavy metals from tap water.
Pure ammonia source: Look for branded “aquarium ammonia” or a fishless cycle product.
Bottled beneficial bacteria (optional but helpful): Consider using “bacteria starter” products.
Liquid test kit: For testing ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, pH, KH, and GH.
Thermometer: To monitor temperature.
Hardscape and substrate: Include hides, decor, and either a bare bottom or axolotl-safe substrate, such as fine sand.
Live plants (optional): These can help with nitrate uptake and overall stability.
Step-by-Step: How to Fishless Cycle Your Axolotl Tank
1. Set Up the Tank and Equipment
Start here
Get your axolotl tank layout running exactly as it will be used long-term.
Place the tank on a stable, level surface away from direct sunlight and heat sources.
Add substrate (if using), hides, hardscape, and any live plants.
Install the filter and sponge/bio media; set up an air pump if using a sponge filter.
Add a thermometer to monitor temperature during the cycle.
Do not add the axolotl yet—this is a fishless cycle.
2. Fill with Water and Dechlorinate

Remove chlorine and chloramine so beneficial bacteria can survive and colonize the tank.
Fill the tank with tap water to the desired level.
Add the recommended dose of water conditioner/dechlorinator for the full tank volume.
Gently mix or circulate the water so the conditioner is evenly distributed.
Turn on the filter and any air stones to ensure water is moving through the media.
3. Add Ammonia to Feed the Bacteria

Introduce a controlled ammonia source to simulate axolotl waste without harming an animal. Aim for an initial ammonia level of about 2–4 ppm using aquarium-safe ammonia.
Wait an hour and test your ammonia levels with your liquid test kit.
Adjust with tiny additional doses until you reach roughly 2–4 ppm.
Record how many drops or milliliters you used so you can repeat this dose later.
4. Seed with Beneficial Bacteria (Optional but Recommended)
Speeds things up
Adding bottled bacteria or media from an established tank can shorten cycling time.
If you have a trusted, disease-free tank, you can move a small piece of established filter media or a sponge into this filter.
Alternatively, dose a reputable bottled bacteria product according to the label.
Keep the filter running 24/7 so bacteria can attach to the media and surfaces.
5. Test Daily and Re-dose Ammonia as Needed
Monitor closely
Watch the nitrogen cycle develop by tracking ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate levels. You are waiting for this pattern: Ammonia spike → Nitrite spike → Nitrate appears and rises.
Test ammonia and nitrite daily with your liquid kit at similar times.
In the early days, ammonia will stay high, and nitrite will read 0.
After about a week or more, nitrite will start to appear as bacteria convert ammonia.
Once ammonia drops below ~1 ppm, top it back up to 2–4 ppm to keep feeding the bacteria.
Begin testing nitrate; it will start to rise once the second group of bacteria establishes.
6. Wait for the Tank to Process Ammonia in 24 Hours
Cycle completion check
The tank is considered cycled when it can clear a full ammonia dose in one day. From a starting dose of 2–4 ppm ammonia, you want: Ammonia 0 ppm, Nitrite 0 ppm, Nitrate present after 24 hours.
When nitrite has peaked and starts to fall while nitrate climbs, you are nearing completion.
Dose ammonia to 2–4 ppm and note the time.
After 24 hours, test ammonia and nitrite.
If both read 0 ppm and nitrate has increased, your biological filter is cycled.
If ammonia or nitrite is still present, continue daily testing and redosing until the 24-hour clearance is consistent.
Do this for 3 consecutive days to ensure your cycle is holding and complete.
7. Do a Large Water Change and Prepare for Your Axolotl
Before adding the axolotl
Reduce nitrate and match parameters so the tank is safe for your new axolotl.
Perform a large water change (often 50–70%) to bring nitrate down to a comfortable level under 20 ppm.
Dechlorinate all new water before it enters the tank.
Re-test ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and pH; ammonia and nitrite must be 0 ppm.
Ensure temperature is within the safe axolotl range.
Once stable, you can introduce your axolotl. The feeding and waste will now be the ongoing ammonia source.
How Long Does Cycling Take?
For most new axolotl tanks, a fishless cycle typically takes around 6-12 weeks. Sometimes it can be a bit faster if you use seeded media or strong bottled bacteria. Temperature, pH, and how consistently you dose ammonia all influence the speed. If you are still seeing measurable ammonia or nitrite after 24 hours at any point, the cycle is not finished—keep going until the tank can repeatedly process a full dose.
What to Do (and Not Do) While Cycling
Do keep the filter running 24/7. Beneficial bacteria need oxygenated, flowing water.
Do avoid over-cleaning. Don’t scrub all surfaces or rinse media under untreated tap water; this can kill bacteria.
Do top up evaporated water with conditioned water. Evaporation concentrates minerals and nitrates, so just add dechlorinated water only.
Don’t add your axolotl early. “Cycling with the animal” exposes them to toxic ammonia and nitrite.
Don’t chase pH with lots of chemicals. Stability is more important than hitting a perfect number, but do keep your pH above 7.6 ppm, as low pH can stall the cycle.
Don’t turn the filter off overnight. Bacteria can die back quickly without flow and oxygen.
Quick Troubleshooting
Ammonia won’t drop at all:
- Check that you removed chlorine/chloramine properly.
- Confirm your ammonia source is pure and not full of detergents.
- Consider adding a bottled bacteria product or seeded media.
Nitrite is very high and “stuck”:
- Partial water changes can dilute extreme nitrite levels, but only do this if you max the nitrite to 5 ppm or over.
- Keep dosing small amounts of ammonia so the first bacteria group doesn’t starve.
Nitrate is extremely high before you add the axolotl:
- Do one or several large water changes (with dechlorinator) to bring it down.

Cycling your axolotl tank is the slow, slightly boring part of axolotl keeping. But it’s also the step that prevents emergency vet visits, mysterious deaths, and endless water quality problems.
